أثارت الظاهرة الاستشراقية وما زالت تثير جدلاً حامياً بين مؤيديها ومعارضيها، بل إننا نستطيع الجزم بأنها أكثر المسائل إثارة للجدل والنقاش، وسوف تستمر هكذا ولأحقاب لاحقة، حتى يتم فهم هذه الظاهرة فهماً علمياً، بعيداً عن التعصب والولاء. والسؤال الذي يتبادر إلى الذهن للوهلة الأولى: لماذا هذا الجدل؟ ولماذا الاختلاف حول حسنات وسيئات الاستشراق؟ وما وجهة النظر العلمية حول هذا الموضوع؟ ولماذا الاهتمام بدراسة الاستشراق وسبر أغواره والغوص في لجج بحاره؟ هذه الأسئلة وغيرها ستكون هدف هذه الدراسة التي نقلب صفحاتها، والتي يتعرض فيها المؤلف إلى هذه الظاهرة العلمية، متطرقاً إلى أصلها وتطورها التاريخي منذ الأزمان الموغلة في القدم-أي منذ التقاء الشرق بالغرب-مروراً بالعلاقة بين الإسلام والمسيحية في القرون الوسطى، حتى بيان آثار هذه العلاقة في العصر الحديث. وبعد الانتهاء من عملية التأصيل التاريخي للاستشراق، وبيان سبب منشأته وتطوره، انتقل لدراسة المراحل التي مرت بها هذه الظاهرة العلمية، متطرقاً إلى خصائص كل مرحلة، مبيناً مدى تأثيرها على الدراسات الشرقية بصورة عامة، وكيفية معالجتها لبعض القضايا الإسلامية بصورة خاصة، مشيراً إلى حركة التأثر والتأثير التي نتجت عن هذه الظاهرة وخاصة في ما يتعلق بأهدافها وأغراضها ومراميها، وما كانت تقصد إليه منذ نشأتها وحتى إبان زوالها وانقراضها في أيامنا هذه.
