بطل هذه المسرحيه موظف صغير اسمه كروك. يقص المؤلف حياته بطريقه مختلفه تمامًا عن المألوف؛ إذ تظهر فى هذه المسرحيه شخصيه البيروقراطى وعالمه الذى لا يعرف معنى الإنسانيه أو الذى هو عدو للإنسانيه؛ لأن العلاقه بين كروك ورؤسائه فى العمل هى نفس العلاقه بين ما هو إنسانى وما هو غير إنسانى. ويستخدم كروك أسلوب المحاكاه الساخره فى إثبات إن الإنسان إذا أراد أن يتغلب على المصاعب فعليه أن يخفى جميع الجوانب الإنسانيه فيه، حتى يعامله الجميع كإنسان عادل فى عالم البيروقراطيه.
