يقول الباحث في مقدمة كتابه هذا هو مغامرة تأويلية تنطوي على رؤية شخصية، وعلى فكرة كيفية قراءة نص سواء أكان حكاية أو ترجمة أم رحلة أم مادة معجمية. في الدراسة الأولى: حينما يتحول الحلم إلى عادة "عرض الباحث مفهومي الكرم العربي، كرم حاتم الطائي الذي يعيش في سحر الجمال الأليم لأحلام العرب حتى أنه لم يولد إلا ليكون كريماً، ولم يمت إلا ليباشر كرمه.
وفي الدراسة الثانية "انعطاف الثقافة على نفيها" أجاب عن سؤالين أساسيين هما: من المؤلف الذي يشبه ابن منظور؟ وما الكتاب الذي يشبه معجم لسان العرب؟ وتتوقف عند مفهومي الجمع والتلخيص من حيث هما ممارستان شائعتان في التراث العربي. وتنظر إليهما على أـنهما ممارستان مريبتان، كما تتوقف عند المعرفة من حيث هي سلطة، وعند مفهوم نقاء اللغة العربية، وخطر شوبها.
أما في الدراسة الثالثة "رحلة مخطوط إمبراطوري" فعرض أفكاراً على علاقة السرد بالسلطة، والمعايير التي تتحكم في اختيار ما يسرد، والأسس الثقافية التي تتحكم في السرد، وفي هذه الفكرة الأخيرة تشترك هذه الدراسة مع الدراسة الرابعة "القدر والجبين" حيث القدر هو الذي ينشئ الحكاية في كتاب الليالي.
أما عن الدراستان الأخيرتان: عن كتاب مؤلفه مجهول وعن شخصية مغمورة، لكنها محشورة بين أعلام عصرها، فيقول الباحث أن قراءة كل منهما تشعرنا بالحياة التي تحوي بناءً خفياً، وبأن لكل عمل من أعمالنا معنى، وبأن حياتنا هي في حقيقتها تلبية لحاجة في أن نترك فيها سراً يدوم كي يخلدنا.
بين مقاربة الفكرة ودقّة التعبير عنها توجد ثغرة واضحة, هي ثغرة المتعذّر التعبير عنه. إن معرفة الفكرة لن تتحقق قبل أن ينجز عرضها, وبما أن الفكرة تولد في الذهن, وتتكشف على الورق, فإن إحساس الكاتب بكتابة كل شيء عن فكرته هو إحساس بكتابة جزء منها ليس غير.
