وجاء في تعريف الكتاب ما يلي: المؤرخ العراقي العربي الكبير «صالح أحمد العلي»، من القامات الكبيرة في مجال التكريس العلمي للمنظور القومي العربي في دراسة التاريخ. وكما يدل العنوان الفرعي لهذا الكتاب، فإن حياة الرجل كانت رحلة حافلة بمعالم التأسيس لمنهج أكاديمي مميّز لدراسة التاريخ العربي. ومن أجل هذه الغاية، قام المؤلف باستعراض توصيفي نادر للمسيرة العلمية للمؤرخ الكبير، عبر مراحل حياته المختلفة: من الموصل إلى بغداد، فالقاهرة للدراسة الجامعية، ثم أكسفورد للدراسات العليا، وبغداد مرّة أخرى للعمل في الجامعة، وهارفارد في زمالة بحثية.. ثم إلى التدرج الأكاديمي المهني داخل العراق حتى تولّى موقع رئيس المجمع العلمي العراقي لنحو عشرين عاماً (1978 ـ 1996) ومن بعدها استئناف لعمله الأكاديمي في حقل التاريخ العربي حتى رحيله.
