من الصعب أن يدرس التركيب بعيدا عن دلالته، كما ان السياق يفرض نفسه على تلك الدراسات أيضا ، لأن التركيب لا ينعزل عن السياق بنوعيه، اللغوي الذي يعتمد على ما حول النص من ظروف خارجية تفرض نفسها عليه. يتضمن هذا الكتاب خمسة فصول، بحث أولها علاقة المعنى بالمصطلح النحوي متمثلا فى مصطلحات الوصف ، وبحث الثاني علاقة العدد ( الإفراد والتثنية والجمع) بالسياق فى الدراسات اللغوية والقرانية، وبحث الثالث دور السياق فى تقدير مرجع الضمير في تلك الدراسات، وبحث الرابع علاقة السياق بتقدير المحذوف فى روايات نجيب محفوظ ، أما الفصل الخامس فقد بحث التقديم والتأخير فى نص حديث أيضا هو (حديث الأربعاء) لطه حسين. هذه الدراسات جميعا يربطها خيط واحد هو انها تربط دراسة التركيب بالدلالة من ناجية وبالسياقين اللغوي وغير اللغوي من ناحية أخرى.
