كثيرة هي القصص والوقائع والأحداث التي شهدها العراق منذ الغزو الأميركي في مارس/آذار 2003، إلا أن تجربة الصحافي – الروائي تظل مختلفة، لأنه يعيش الحدث، ويشرع في لحظة التوثيق، لحظة بلحظة، وساعة بعد ساعة، ويوماً بعد آخر، فتأتي الكتابة لوحة عجائبية، ترسم الضحايا. كما تصور الغازي، وهكذا فعل "وارد بدر السالم" في عمله الحيّ والرائع "عجائب بغداد". وفي هذا العمل حكايات عاشها بدر السالم في ليالي بغداد المظلمة مع صحافيين آخرين، يصف فيها بشاعة مقتل الصحافية "أطوار بهجت" وكيف التقى "خميس الأسود"، وأنثى الـ BBC، وسط أصوات القنابل والفزع التي لا يمكن سماعها أو تخيلها. يقول: "... تحولت الغرف إلى ملاذات جماعية لا سبيل إلى تركها. كانت بارات صغيرة ومقاهي تصلح للتزاور والتعارف بين جموع المراسلين الأجانب وخلطائهم العرب. تصلح للقصص والحكايات والأخبار واجترار ما حدث بأكثر من عين ولسان. فليل العاصمة مظلم لا يُحتمل والخديعة متربصة والغدر يتحول إلى قصص في بلد فقد هواءه النقي وظل يستنشق الغبار طيلة فصوله. همرات ومارينز وصحفيون ومراسلون ووجوه عراقية متلبسة بالغموض والبلادة والحزن وأطياف من الأسئلة. هذه أول مرة أرى وجوهاً عراقية بهذا التكرار؛ نساء متشحات بعباءات سود، شاردات الأنظار، محجبات. وجوه قلقلة، ورجال محاصرون يفترسهم الهم والغد المقبل بالوعود، يحملون فايلات ملونة ويلوحون بها كأنهم سيدخلون الجنة من بوابة الشيراتون بحماية جنود المارينز!...". وهكذا بهذا الخطاب الروائي يبني وارد بدر السالم فضاء روائياً خصباً تتشابك أحداثه، وتكثر شخصياته، فتكون "عجائب بغداد" في مستوى الكلام حين يجدّ.
