يعرض الباحث المصري إبراهيم العيسوي في فصول كتابه "العدالة الاجتماعية والنماذج التنموية شواهد اللامساواة في مصر، وفي العالم العربي والعالم عموماً. وقد استند الكاتب إلى ملاحظة علمية أن أقساماً كبيرة من العالم شهدت انحساراً في تفاوت توزيع الدخل والثروة بين نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية وأوائل سبعينيات القرن المنصرم، الأمر الذي أدى إلى تحسن ظاهر في أوضاع الطبقات الشعبية. لكن، مع انهيار الاتحاد السوفياتي، شهد العالم مجدداً تراجعاً في سياسات الرفاه في الدول المتقدمة واتجاهاً نحو اقتصاد السوق، وتقليص الإنفاق الاجتماعي الحكومي، ما أدى إلى عودة التوتر والظلم الاجتماعي إلى سابق عهده.
وحاول الكاتب أن يصوغ أكثر من تعريفٍ لمفهوم "العدالة الاجتماعية"، ويدقّق في معناها؛ في سبيل بناء مفهومٍ يواكب التطلع البشري إلى مكافحة الظلم. ويلاحظ المؤلف أنّ مفهوم العدالة الاجتماعية يشتبك مع مفهوم التنمية الشاملة المستدامة، لذلك لا يرى أيّ إمكانية لتحقيق العدالة الاجتماعية دفعةً واحدة، وفي زمنٍ قصير. بل إنّ الأمر يتطلب نماذجَ جديدة للتنمية وإزالة العوائق التي تحول دون تحقّق العدالة؛ كالسياسات الحكومية والقوانين.
يحتوي الكتاب على مقدمة، وستة فصول، وثلاثة ملاحق إحصائية، يتناول الفصل الأول: "حقبة جديدة من الظلم الإجتماعي وأمل يتجدد في العدالة الإجتماعية"، الفصل الثاني: "في تحديد معنى العدالة الإجتماعية"، الفصل الثالث: "العدالة الإجتماعية والنمو والتنمية"، الفصل الرابع: "في تعميق البحث عن النموذج التنموي الملائم"، الفصل الخامس: "مصر بين جدل النهايات وجدل البدايات"، الفصل السادس: "آفاق تحقيق العدالة الإجتماعية".
