بدأ كتابة القصص القصيرة في المرحلة الجامعية، ونشرت أول رواية له وهي رواية “ديازيبام” في عام 2000.
نشر بعض القصص القصيرة والمقالات في الجرائد والمجلات المحلية مثل مجلة “نزوى” الثقافية.
عمل طبيبا اختصاصيّا في الطب النفسي بمستشفى الأمراض النفسية العام في مسقط.
مُنعت روايته “الوخز” الصادرة في عام 2005 لفترة قبل أن يتم الإفراج عنها من قبل سلطات الرقابة.
يناقش حسين العبري في أعماله الأدبية القضايا الاجتماعية والسياسية التي يمر بها المجتمع العماني.
اُختير للمشاركة في مهرجان (بيروت 39) الذي هدف إلى تقديم نظرة جديدة إلى الأدب العربي المعاصر، وهو نتاج تعاون بين مؤسسة هاي فيستيفال وبيروت عاصمة عالمية للكتاب لعام 2009.

في "رصاص من كأس العدم" يبدو الشعر إضافة فلسفية، واستجابة ذاتية لأثر الأشياء في النفس، يأخذ من النفس حركتيها الإنفعالية تجاه الجمال، ويأخذ من العقل الثبات، هذه الخلطة المعرفية هي ما جعلت من قصائد الشعر حسين العبري ذات رؤية خاصة، تتأمل في المطلق، كالتأمل في الموت والنفس الإنسانية، والتساؤل عن المعنى عبر حركة الزمان، والمكان، مع ما يرافقها من سمة الشخصية والتجسيد. يتوزع الديوان على (477) مقطعاً شعرياً يتراوح بين الطول والقصر جاء يحمل في تلافيفه معانٍ إنسانية محركة للعقل والعاطفة معاً، ويتنوع بتنوع مفرداته التي تصلنا وفي سطورها الكثير من الرغبة والرهبة في آن ... في المقطع رقم (360) يقول الشاعر: "كل لقاء مشهد افتتاح لفراق قادم ! كل حياة تمهيد لموت قابع ! تنتهي المسرحية بإسدال الستارة. وأنتهي حين يَسقط القدر نقطته عليّ!"
