رفيق حبيب هو مفكر مصري مسيحي من مواليد القاهرة سبتمبر 1959م، ينتسب إلى الطائفة الإنجيلية وهو نائب رئيس حزب الحرية والعدالة المنبثق من جماعة الإخوان المسلمين. يعد أحد المفكرين المعتدلين في مصر.
حصل رفيق على درجة ماجستير في الآداب تخصص علم نفس من كلية الآداب بجامعة عين شمس في 1985، ثم درجة دكتوراه الفلسفة في الآداب تخصص علم نفس اجتماعي من ذات الجامعة في 1988.
عين مستشارا في الفريق الرئاسي لمحمد مرسي واعتزل العمل السياسي احتجاجا على موقعة الاتحادية

الإنقلاب العسكري الذي تجسَد في بيان الجيش الذي ألقاه الفريق "عبد الفتاح السَيسي"، وزير الدفاع المصري في 3 يوليو 2013 لم يطح رئيس وسلطة شرعية جاءت عن طريق التمثيل الإنتخابي الشعبي فحسب، وإنما كان وأداً لعملية التحول الديمقراطي بشكل كامل. ليضفي الإنقلاب مشهداً ضبابياً على موجة الربيع العربي بشكل عام، والثورة المصرية بشكل خاص نظراً إلى ما تمثله الدولة المصرية من ثقل سياسي وجيو –استراتيجي وأمني بالمنطقة.
في هذا الكتاب، يطرح الباحث والمفكر د. رفيق حبيب رؤيته لأحداث 30 يونيو والحراك السياسي الذي حدث في 3 يوليو 2013، حيث يعتبر حبيب أن الإنقلاب العسكري قام بسبب معركة الهوية بشكل أساسي واستهدف إقصاء القوى الإسلامية وخصوصاً جماعة الإخوان المسلمين – حتى يتمكن الإنقلابيون من فرض هويَة علمانية على المجتمع، وأن الإنقلاب أدخل القوات المسلحة في معركة الهوية المشتعلة أساساً في المجتمع بين القوى السياسية والكتل الإجتماعية المختلفة.
د. رفيق حبيب، المفكر القبطي المعروف استطاع وعبر ثلاثة فصول من الكتاب تشريح أسباب الإنقلاب العسكري ومآلاته السياسية والإجتماعية الناجمة عنه، كما طرح أيضاً إمكانية استمراره من عدمه، منحازاً إلى الخيار الثاني معتبراً أن القاعدة الجماهيرية الأعرض عمقها إسلامي، وهناك صعوبة في احتوائها من العسكر وحلفائه من القطاعات المدنية العلمانية.
