نى المؤلف كتابه على أبواب الفقه حسب ورودها في كتابه التنبيه للفقيه الشافعي إبراهيم بن علي الشيرازي. فوقف عند ألفاظ وعبارات رأى ضرورة شرحها. وأورد المؤلف الكلمات التي أراد شرحها من غير تجريد أو إعادة إلى الأصل، بل تبدو كما تستعمل اسماً أو فعلاً أو أداة ودون ترتيبها ترتيباً ألفبائياً، ثم اهتم بضبطها. وقدم المؤلف للمعجم بمقدمة تفصح عن رؤيته العلمية وتبين هدفه كما تبين ميزة الكتاب. وقد جمع الكتاب جميع ما يتعلق بألفاظ كتاب التنبيه فميَّز فيه اللغات العربية والمعربة والألفاظ المولدة والمقصورة والممدودة وما يجوزان فيه والمذكر والمؤنث وما يجوزان فيه والمجموع والمفرد والمشتق وعددَ لغات اللفظة وأسماء المسمى الواحد المترادفة وتصريف الكلمة وبيان الألفاظ المشتركة ومعانيها، والفروق بينها، وما اختلف في أنه حقيقة أو مجاز وما يعرف مفرده ويُجهل جمعه وعكسه وما له جمع وما له جموع. والفرق بين الكلمات المتشابهة وبيان ما قد يُلحق فيه، وما هو صواب وتوهم جماعة أنه غلط، والعام والخاص. وأشياء كثيرة لغوية فقهية. قال المؤلف: وهذا الكتاب شرح لمعظم ألفاظ كتب المذهب الشافعي.
