في ضوء المليون ونصف المليون جندي الذين شاركوا في حرب الخليج، فإن هذا الصراع، لدى مقارنته بصراعات أخرى من نفس الحجم أو من حجم أكبر، كان مقيداً من حيث المدة، كما كان بالنسبة للمنتصرين على الأقل غير ذي شأن يذكر فيما يتعلق بالخسائر، إلا أن أهمية الحرب لا تكمن في حجمها أو خسائرها، بل في الآثار السياسية والفنية-العلمية والعسكرية الهائلة. وحيث إن هذا الكتاب قد وضع بعد توفر الحقائق ذات العلاقة، فإنه يقدم المساهمات الفريدة التالية: أولاً: إنه جهد جماعي بذله أناس من عدة أقطار وفروا معلومات هامة عن قواتهم العسكرية ودبلوماسيتهم، ثانياً: إنه يتجاوز توفير رواية عسكرية للحرب فيفسر أهمية النواحي العسكرية للصراع، وكيف آثرت الحرب على كثير من النواحي الأخرى لحياتنا مثل حرية الصحافة، وخطر الإرهاب، وأخلاقيات الحرب، ويوفر للقارئ استعراضاً وافياً للأبعاد الدولية للصراع، كما أن كل فصل تقريباً، سواء كان متعلقاً بالدبلوماسية أو العمليات العسكرية أو بموضوع أكثر تحديداً، ينسج تصرفات وأدوار جميع المشاركين الرئيسيين في حكاية توضح ديناميكيات الحرب، وفضلاً عن ذلك فن هذا الكتاب يملك البيانات الإحصائية المناسبة عن القوات الجوية والبحرية التي شاركت في الحرب، وعن أوامر المعارك وأبعاد العمليات القتالية والخسائر في المعارك والحقائق ذات العلاقة بالموضوع.
