تميزت حياة جون تشرتشل، دوق مارلبورو الأول بأنها كانت حياة مثيرة وشديدة التعقيد. ذلك لأن عمله في مجالي الحرب والسياسة، جندياً ورجل دولة، كان من العوامل الحيوية في ثراء إنكلترا ونفوذها خلال عهد الملكة (آن) وخلال السنوات والعهود التالية. وقد اكتسبت أعمال (مارلبورو) أهميتها من خلال تأثيرها في مسيرة الأحداث السياسية لا في إنكلترا وحدها، بل في أوروبا كلها خلال الفترة الكائنة بين نهاية القرن السابع عشر. وليس من الغريب بعد ذلك أن يقام له نصب تذكاري ومتحف في (بلينهايم) حيث خاض اشهر معاركه وأحرز أضخم انتصاراته. وليست زيارة عشرات الألوف سنوياً لذلك المتحف إلا برهاناً على تقويم الأوروبيين لحياة هذا القائد وتأثيره العميق في صنع تاريخهم، وإذا كان هناك رجل يمكن اتخاذه رمزاً يمثل عصر الملكة (آن) فقد لا يكون من هو أجدر من (جون تشرتشل) للقيام بهذا الدور، إن من حيث كونه رجل حرب أو سياسة حتى بات اسمه كالشمس بين الكواكب. حول سيرة هذا القائد جاء مضمون هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا والمعنون بـ "مارلبورو" جون تشرشل دوق مارلبورو".
