يعتبر تشرشل (1874 - 1965)، أحد أهم الزعماء فى التاريخ البريطانى والعالمى الحديث، شغل منصب رئيس وزراء بريطانيا عام 1940، واستمر فيه خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية، استطاع رفع معنويات شعبه أثناء الحرب حيث كانت خطاباته إلهاماً عظيماً إلى قوات الحلفاء، كان أول من أشار بعلامه النصر بواسطة الإصبعين السبابة والوسطى، بعد انتهاء الحرب خسر الانتخابات سنة 1945، واصبح زعيم المعارضة ثم عاد الى منصب رئيس الوزراء ثانية فى عام 1951، واخيراً تقاعد سنة 1955، حصل على جائزة نوبل فى الأدب لسنة 1953، للعديد من مؤلفاته فى التاريخ الإنجليزى والعالمى، وفى استطلاع لهيئة الاذاعة والبريطانية سنة 2002، اختير كواحد من أعظم مائه شخصية بريطانية.
