"وأخيراً وبعد جهد وصلت إلى نهاية الطريق الرملية الموصلة إلى البحر. فلفح الهواء وجهها وصدرها، فشعرت بالانتعاش، يعود إليها، فشدت من عضدها، وراحت تكمل السير نزولاً باتجاه الشاطئ الذي خلا إلا من بعض الصيادين، يرمون شباكهم في البحر. جلست على الرمال الباردة، وشرعت تنظر إلى الامتداد الأزرق أمامها، وإلى الأمواج الهادرة، وهي تعلن اندحارها في كل ثانية أمام الرمال السوداء. رفعت رأسها إلى الأعلى فإذا بها تفاجأ بصخرة الروشة وهي تنظر إليها بتحدٍ، كأنها تعزيها بالموت. إنها المرة التي تراها فيها عن كثب.. لمعت فكرة الموت في رأسها، فهبت واقفة وكأنا وضعت يدها على الحل، فقبضت عليه، لقد شاهدت مرة أحد الشبان وهو يحاول الانتحار، لقد قام بذلك من الجانب الآخر المواجه للصخرة، نظرة إلى المكان الذي رأت الشاب يرمي نفسه منه، ثم سارعت باتجاهه..".
