"متشمساً كالصخرة" عمل روائي يرادف القص فعل الحياة، بين ثناياه، حتى لكأن الحكاية هي نوع من ذلك التنفس الإصطناعي الذي أبقاه "صفوق الدوغان" معلقاً طيلة زمن السرد بين الحياة المعيشة لبطله وبين الماضي الذي ما يلبث أن يطل برأسه بين فينة وأخرى، ليقول شيء ما بالذاكرة هو لا أبعد، ولا أقرب، من أحلام اليقظة التي تتغير بتغير الزمان والمكان" وجهه المجعد كرغوة صابون لا يصلح للعشق، لكنه كان يحلم، مُجرد حلم لا أكثر، كالفقراء الذين لا يملكون سوى الحلم وقلما استطاع أحد منهم، بعد ما يحالفه الكثير من الحظ مع القليل من العمل الدؤوب، تحقيق النجاح شبه الساحق". والرواية بمعظمها، مجموعة مشاهد روائية تعكس هموم الذات، وخيبات الأمل، حيث يقدم لنا الراوي شخصية قلقة، مأزومة، تحاول تلمس طريقها في زحمة الصراع بين الأفكار والعقائد، عبر تقنية الإسترجاع والتذكر، فيبدو البطل وهو يقارن بين حياته الماضية في القرية وحياته الآنية في المدينة. وهنا يبدأ بالبحث عن فرصة يحقق بها كينونته ليعيش حياته، ولكنه يفشل، فيتردي في مهاوي اليأس والحزن والذي لا يخرج منه سوى بالكتابة، وهذا يحيلنا إلى دور الأدب وعلاقته بالواقع وتأثير كل منهما في الآخر. من هنا لا بد من القول أنه مهما كان الواقع جائراً فإن إمكان تغييره قائم وأدوات التغيير كثيرة، وليس أقلها الأدب.
و "متشمساً كالصخرة" هي الرواية الفائزة بجائزة أثر للرواية العربية المركز الثاني.
