محاولة تتجاوز المألوف يسعى الكاتب من خلالها إلى رسم ملامح شخصية طرفة بن العبد، وتحديد مكانة الشاعر في الحياة الجاهلية، كما حاول المؤلف فك شفرات دالية طرفة بن العبد التي عرفت بأنها واحدة من العلقات العشر، وحاول تحليلها من الداخل مستعيناً بنصوص أخرى للشاعر تساعد على فهم القصيرة بشكل أعمق وقد لجأ الكاتب إلى تناول بعض المفاهيم التي سادت النقد العربي منذ نشأته ومازالت فاعلة حتى اليوم مثل مفهوم السرقة الأدبية وفكرة أعذب الشعر أكذبه كما تعرض لفكرة المفاضلة بين شاعرين التي أنتجت في داخل الثقافة العربية والتي كانت تميل إلى تحكيم الذوق الشخصي في النظر إلى النصوص. وعرج الكاتب على بعض المفاهيم التي تسببت في الخطأ والتشويش الذي أصاب النظرة العلمية للنقد الأدبي، والتي لا يمكن إغفال تأثيرها على الثقافة العربية المعاصرة. وقد ذهب المؤلف إلى أن إزالة سوء الفهم المتعلق بالشعر الجاهلي سيدفع هذا الشعر لياخذ مكانة بين الآداب العالمية كونه رافداً إنسانياً وثقافياً أصيلاً بالنسبة لنا.
