(ضاحي) صبي القهوة أهم شخصيات الرواية، تدور حوله الأفلاك وهو فاعل مهم في الأحداث، يحركها وتتحرك حوله؛ في القهوة موجود وهو عمودها، في المآتم لا يُستغنى عنه، في بيت حبشي هو ركن وبمثابة ابن، وأترك للقارىء استيعاب دوره حتى يستمتع بوصف كمال رُحيَّم له روائيًا. الثلاثة المتسولون حكايات وحكايات، عف عنهم الناس فتعلقوا بضاحي، والعجب أن ضابط القرية هو الآخر متعاطف معهم. المعلم حبشي شقيّ تاب، وشرع في بناء قهوة بكل ما تحت يده من مال "وهذا الكل حرامُ في حرام طبعًا، فما الذي يفعله؟! كان أمام خيارين، إما أن يستمر في الغلط أو يبدأ هذه البداية المُلتبسة، مال قلبه للالتباس والله غفور رحيم مثلما بررها لنفسه!"، وأنجب ابنته عزيزة (خضراء الدمن/ النبته الخضراء في المنبت السوء)، كانت مصدر سعادته والشيء الجميل الذي خرج به من هذه الدنيا، غير أنها وضعت أنفه في التراب وكل ذلك في سرد روائي بديع..
