إن الغاية من هذا الكتاب هو أن نجيب على ثلاثة أسئلة مترابطة، ويتعلق السؤال الأول بتحديد مقاربة مشتركة تقوم على أساس المساهمات الكثيرة والمتميزة لابن تيمية في الخطاب الفقهي والعقيدة والفلسفة والتفسير والحديث والفقه والتصوف والنظرية السياسية والجدل العقدي، هل هناك منهج تيمي واضح المعالم؟ وإذا كان كذلك فما هي خصائص هذا المنهج؟ أما الأمر الثاني الذي نروم بحثه فهو يتمثل في السياق التاريخي لابن تيمية: كيف أثر السياق الفكري والسياسي والاجتماعي في فكر ابن تيمية ومساره المهني؟ ما تأثير جوانب سيرته الشخصية وعلاقاته الاجتماعية وولاءاته الطائفية على تطور أفكاره؟ وأخيرا يرمي هذا الكتاب إلى معرفة مدى طبيعة تأثير فكر ابن تيمية في القرون التي أعقبت وفاته، وكيف كان تلقي المسلمين في العصر الحاضر لأفكار ابن تيمية وكيف قُدمت هذه الأفكار؟ ما السبل التي جعلت من أفكار ابن تيمية تؤثر في هذا التأثير خلال القرن الماضي، وما السبب في تأثيرها؟ هل كان ابن تيمية فعلا مهيمنا على تاريخ الفكر الإسلامي في القرن العشرين، أم أنه هو نفسه كان مهيمَنا عليه جراء مخاوف معاصرة؟
