بطرس الأول : مع أن شهرة تالستوي أو تولستوي ترتبط بإبداعاته القصصية وخاصة روايته الحرب والسلام ، إلا اننا نعجب بإنجازه المسرحي هذا، والذي يلقي فيه الضوء على شخصية فذة في التاريخ الروسي، كثر الجدل حولها حتى ادعى خصوم هذا القيصر بأنه " المسيح الدجال"! وطبيعي أن تولستوي لم يقصد تقديم وثيقة تاريخية من خلال تأليفه لهذه المسرحية، ولكنه وجد مادة درامية غنية في الأحداث والأجواء التي رافقت حكم هذا القيصر، الذي تحولت روسيا في عهده إلى أمة مهمة على خارطة أوربا. الحرب والسلم: ربما تتبلور القيمة الحقيقة، في الموقف الإنساني العام، الذي حاول بولجاكوف التعبير عنه. وهو موقف تولستوي الرافض لفكرة الحرب، ودعواه لترسيخ أفكار الخير والسلم، كأسس وأهداف سامية للحياة الإنسانية. وهذا محوران أساسيان للدراما المعاصرة، جعلا هذه المسرحية تظل حية ومطابقة لأحوالنا الإنسانية المعاصرة. أما قيمتها الفنية، فإنها تعتمد على المعالجة الدرامية الفذة، لقضية تاريخية حاسمة، من المنظور الروسي لحملة نابليون ضد روسيا، وما خلفته من دما على المستوى الإنساني الحضاري.
