حظيت مدينة مكناس التي تعرف فـي التاريخ بـ «مكناسة الزيتون» بمكانة خاصة لدى الأسر المتعاقبة على الحكم فـي المغرب الأقصى، وذلك بسبب موقعها الجغرافـي الفريد، والثابت تاريخياً أن مدينة فاس كانت عاصمة المغرب الأقصى منذ أواخر عهد الأشراف السعديين حتى أيام السلطان المولى رشيد العلوي، وعندما تولى السلطان المولى إسماعيل مقاليد الأمور، شرع فـي تجديد مكناس وتشييد معالمها وأسوارها وجعلها مفخرة معمارية وفنية رائدة، وقام بتحويل قصبتها إلى مدينة زاهية عامرة محصنة بالأسوار، وازدادت أهمية مدينة مكناسة الزيتون باختيارها عاصمة لملكه. وتمتلك مدينة مكناسة الزيتون العديد من المواقع الأثرية، والمعالم الحضارية، والمباني التاريخية، التي تشكل إرثاً حضارياً وثقافـياً عريقاً ظل شاهداً على الدور الذي لعبته هذه المدينة العتيقة فـي الحقب التاريخية المختلفة من تاريخ المغرب الأقصى، وجعل من آثارها، ومعالمها الدينية والحضارية، والتاريخية، ومبانيها التراثية، متحفاً مفتوحاً أمام الزائرين، بالإضافة إلى أنها تحتضن ألواناً متنوعة من الصناعات التقليدية العريقة، وهذا الميراث الحضاري والثقافـي العريق لمدينة مكناسة الزيتون، سهل تصنيفها على قائمة التراث العالمي لليونيسكو عام 1996 م. ولكل هذه الاعتبارات، ينبغي علينا العمل على نشر الوعي الأثري لدى الأطفال والشباب فـي ربوع المملكة المغربية، بأهمية الكنوز الأثرية الثمينة فـي العاصمة الإسماعيلية، مكناسة الزيتون، والسعي إلى تعريف الناشئة والأجيال القادمة بأهم آثارها الإسلامية ومآثرها التاريخية العريقة وإبراز قيمها الحضارية والجمالية. وسوف أصطحبكم على متن صفحات هذا العدد من سلسلة «روائع الآثار المغربية للأطفال والناشئين»، إلى زيارة مكناسة الزيتون لنتعرف على أسوارها، وأبراجها، وقلاعها، ودورها، وقصورها، وبساتينها، ومساجدها ومدارسها، لكي نتأمل سويا فـي عظمة بنائها وتنوع فنونها وثراء زخرفها. راجين من الله عز وجل أن تسعدوا بالحديث عنها، وأن تتعلموا منه، وأن تقضوا فـي رحاب عاصمتكم الإسماعيلية الجميلة وقتاً ممتعاً، فخورين بما أبدعته أيدي أجدادكم العظماء.
