من المعلوم أن السيميوطيقا، بوصفها طريقة منهجية علمية في مقاربة النصوص والخطابات، قد عرفت، منذ الستينيات، عدة تنويعات أو «تقليعات»، وسارت في عدة اتجاهات، واقتحمت عدة مجالات، لعل من أبرزها السرديات؛ كما حصل مع غريماص وسيميائيّي مدرسة باريس مثلا. وعلى الرغم مما حققته السيميوطيقا السردية، في منشئها الغربي، بفضل جهود مجموعة من أقطابها المعروفين، ومن انتقالها - منذ زمن - إلى البيئة النقدية العربية المعاصرة، إلا أنه يلاحظ، أحيانا، محدودية استيعاب قطاع مهم من ناقدينا لآلياتها المنهاجية، ومفهوماتها الإجرائية، وهو ما ينعكس، حتماً، على نتائج دراساتهم المتوسلة بالمقاربة السيميائية. وهذا الداعي هو الذي حمل د. جميل حمداوي على تأليف هذا العمل النقدي، الجامع بين النظري والتطبيقي، والمكرس، بفصوله الخمسة الكبرى، لتحديد جملة من المفاهيم المحورية في السيميائيات السردية والخطابية بكيفية مبينة تيسر الفهم والتمثل، ولرصد مختلف معايير تقطيع النصوص في حقل السيميوطيقا، ولبيان مسارات تشكل الدلالة والمعنى في السرود المكتوبة، انطلاقا من التركيز على نموذج بعينه، هو سيميائيات الفعل والعمل كما في التصور الغريماصي، وللتعريف بواحدة من أحدث السيميوطيقات التي تجاوزت الاهتمام بالأشياء والموضوعات والأعمال إلى الاحتفال بالأهواء والإنفعالات والحالات النفسية عموما.. إنها سيميوطيقا الأهواء التي يعد جاك فونتاني أحد دعاتها البارزين في أوربا. وقد عرف بها د. حمداوي، بشكل مستفيض، مبرزا مبادئها ومفاهيمها وخصائصها وميكانزمات اشتغالها في التحليل النصي والخطابي، قبل أن ينتقل إلى تجريبها في قراءة السرد العربي المعاصر، من خلال نموذجين إبداعيين سعوديين؛ أحدهما رواية، والآخر قصة قصيرة جدا.
