هذا الكتاب دراسة تاريخية تتناول الأصول السياسية والشرعية في زمن الرسول، أي المرحلة الأولى لحياة الإسلام إبان دولة الرسول، حاول المؤلف من خلالها تسليط الضوء على البنية السياسية والإجتماعية التي برز فيها نشاط المسلمين، كنواة أساسية في بناء المجتمع الإسلامي الكبير، وظاهرة دينية إيديولوجية موجودة داخل شبه الجزيرة العربية ومختلفة عن الحركات العصبية العربية، التي كانت موجودة في تلك البقعة الجغرافية، إن من ناحية الأفكار، أو الفهم المغاير للواقع المعاش الذي كان النبي يتحرك فيه. لذلك كله يعود المؤلف في هذه الدراسة إلى تحليل السيرة النبوية الشريفة، متناولاً تفاصيلها من أجل المعرفة الشرعية إلى جانب التاريخ الإسلامي. تأتي أهمية كتابة تاريخ الإسلام السياسي مقروناً بالجانب الشرعي من كونها تقود إلى "بلورة الفعل والقول والتقرير الصادر عن النبي. وهذا شكل فيما بعد السَنة النبوية الشريفة ، مما يعني، أن الأحداث التاريخية التي حصلت في تلك الفترة تؤدي إلى تأويل الظواهر السياسية وفلسفة البعد الديني، يغية إشباع وإيضاح الجانب الشرعي منها كتفسير للظاهرة التاريخية (...)". وبناءً على ما تقدم قسمت الدراسة إلى خمسة فصول تتناول نشأة الإسلام، والأسس الإدارية والسياسية لدولة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، والعقود والمعاهدات السياسية في دولة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم. إضافة إلى بيان أثر العقائج الإسلامية في التربية الإجتماعية زمن النبي مع عرض الواجبات الشرعية كنماذد، أي العبادة اليومية- مع التركيز على البعد السياسي والإجتماعي للفرائض ومنها الجهاد وأخيرأً تم الحديث عن تطور الدولة الإسلامية بعد النبي، ونشوء الحزبية السياسية والإتجاهات السياسية، وخاصة الأحزاب التي كان لها دور الفاعل في ظهور الخلافة، مع عرض للفرق السياسية المعارضة التي تعتقد بعدم الإستخلاف السياسي للرسول، ومدى توافق الإجراءات السياسية التي تلت عصر الرسول مع تطلعات الفكر الإسلامي.
