"الظلال الحزينة" مجموع قصص قصيرة تقع ضمن ثيمة رواية الأخبار تضم ما بين السطور أحداثاً ووقائع تاريخية لشخصيات عظيمة وأبطال شهدتها العصور السابقة.
عبر تقنية السرد، وبأسلوب روائي متخيل يستحضر "خالد السعيد" الفترة التي تلت وفاة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم ليعبَر من خلالها عن حقبة حاسمة في التاريخ العربي الإسلامي، عندما بدأ الاختلاف على تولي زمام أمر المسلمين متنقلاً عبر شخوص قصصه القصيدة هذه ما بين الشام، والكوفة، ومصر والحجاز، ذاكراً أسماء المعارك والخلفاء والملوك والسلاطين، بأسلوب قصصي يوثق الصلة بالماضي، فتتكاثف المشاهد أمامنا، وتشخيص المعارك وأبطالها وكأنها واقعاً حياً يناقش من خلالها واقعاً سياسياً وتاريخياً كان وما يزال حائلاً، وحاضراً في حياتنا الإجتماعية، حيث اختلاف الأيديوليوجيات والنظرة إلى الآخر المختلف في الدين، والجنس، والانتماء وتأثيره على استقرار الحياة وانسيابها الطبيعي في كل عصر وكل زمن.
هذا، ويضم العمل سبعة عشر قصة قصيرة جاءت بعناوين مختلفة نذكر منها: كاهنة البربر، الثورة السوداء، الخليفة المتسول، آخر أيام بغداد... الخ.
