ظلت الصورة القاتمة التي يكتنزها أهل السنة في المملكة العربية السعودية تجاه مواطنيهم الشيعة هي السيطرة في الذهنية السنية عامة والسلفية خاصة. في المقابل ثمة صورة نمطية وحادة رسمت في الذهنية الشيعية منذ أربعة عشر قرناً عن أهل السنة وغذيت عقائدياً وتربوياً من خلال المراجع الدينية واستخدمت في عدة مراحل تاريخية من جهات سياسية إقليمية كما استخدمت الشعارات السنية كذلك وللأسباب نفسها. هاتان الصورتان المتناقضتان انعكستا سلباً وإيجاباً بحوادث ومواقف سياسية وعسكرية منذ قيام المملكة العربية السعودية كما نعرفها اليوم مروراً بالحديث الخطير في التاريخ المعاصر أي نجاح الثورة الخمينية ومحاولات تصدير أفكار هذه الثورة وتداعياتها المتتالية فصولاً، وصولاً إلى تفجير الخبر عام 1996 وما تبع ذلك من أحداث في المنطقة كلها. في هذا الكتاب رصد موثق بالأسماء والتواريخ ووصف دقيق للصورتين المشار إليهما، علماً أنه لا يهدف إلى إظهار عيوب أو طمس محاسن أو العكس. ولا يسعى إلى استرضاء طائفة على حساب أخرى، إنما هي محاولة لقراءة المساحة الفاصلة بين أهل الشرق السعودي وبقية الجهات الوطنية والرسمية وتحديد العناوين الجامعة والمانعة للتعايش الوطني.
