لقد اختفى التاريخ القديم لمدينة مسقط في غياهب ظلام حالك وذهب طي النسيان، وربما تكون مسقط هي الخليج الصخري الذي يطلق عليه بيريبلوس اسم موسكا، ومن المشكوك فيه جداً أن تكون مسقط معروفة منذ العصور القديمة، ويذكرها الجغرافيون العرب كمحطة للمسافرين المتوجهين إلى الهند والصين، الذين يتزودون فيها لآخر مرة بالماء قبل بداية مرحلة العبور إلى الهند، وقد يكون أول من ذكر اسم مدينة مسقط هو الإدريسي سنة 1153م، الذي يذكر في وصفه لهذه البلاد أن مسقط مدينة كثيرة السكان، غير أننا نجد مدناً عمانية أخرى أقدم منها بكثير مثل: الرستاق، وقلهات، وجعلان، وبهلة، وصحار، كما أنها كانت أكثر منها أهمية في ذلك العهد، أما ماركو بولو وأبو الفداء اللذان كتبا في النصف الثاني من القرن الثالث عشر فإنهما لا يعرفان مسقط بين المدن العمانية، وكذلك الحال بالنسبة لابن بطوطة الذي وصل سنة 1324م عن طريق البحر إلى قلهات في بلاد عمان.
