يتناول هذا الكتاب الترجمة العربية الأولى لرحلة السويدي جان أوتر، وهي الرحلة التي طال انتظار المؤرخين والباحثين العرب لها، لأهميّتها وندرتها؛ فهي تغطّي أحداث السنوات (1736-1743)، أي المرحلة العصيبة التي كان فيها نادر شاه على راس السلطة في بلاد فارس. وهذه الرحلة تمثّل السجل المعاصر المفضّل الوحيد عن أحداث العراق والخليج العربي وإيران خلال تلك المرحلة.
تغطي الترجمة جزءاً واسعاً من الكتاب المعنون رحلات في تركيا وبلاد فارس، تناولنا في مسار الرحلة من مدينة أورفا إلى كرمنشاه، ثمّ عودة الرحّالة من كرمنشاه إلى بغداد ومنها إلى البصرة وإقامته فيها، ومن ثمّ عودته منها إلى أورفا في طريقه إلى إسطنبول. وما كتبه الرحّالة عن العراق خلال هذه المرحلة له أهميّة استثنائيّة من الناحية التاريخيّة؛ إذ شهد الصراع بين السلطان العثماني محمود الأول ونادر شاه، وكان شاهد عيان على استغلال والي بغداد الشهير أحمد باشا الأوضاع السياسيّة المعقّدة التي كانت تمرُّ بالبلاد لتقوية سلطته وتوسيعها إلى البصرة ومن ثمّ الاستيلاء على ولايتها، وعلاقته بشيوخ المنتفك، ولاسيما الشيخ سعدون بن محمد. وإلى جانب ذلك، تسجّل هذه الرحلو معلومات غاية في الأهميّة عن محاولات عرب الخليج العربي، ولاسيما في مسقط، لمواجهة الهيمنة الفارسية على المنطقة.
تتضمن الرحلة معلومات جفرافيّة واقتصاديّة واجتماعيّة مهمة أيضاً؛ فهي تتناول الحديث عن التجارة والمصالح الأجنبيّة في الخليج العربي، والمحاولات الفرنسية لاستعادة نشاطهم التجاري في البصرة. كما تتضمّن معلومات جغرافيّةً دقيقةً عن مدن العراق المختلفة، وكذلك مدن الخليج العربي وجزره، مثل القطيف والبحرين وقيس. وتتناول الحديث عن أصل القبائل الكرديّة واليزيديّة، وما إلى ذلك.
نأمل أن يكون هذا الكتاب مصدراً مفيداً وممتعاً لكل الباحثين والمؤرّخين والمهتمين بدراسة هذه الحقبة التاريخيّة من تاريخ المنطقة العربيّة.
