كان السي عبد الهادي بقامته القصيرة ممدداً على فراشه البسيط، لحيته الصغيرة البيضاء منتصبة شعيراتها كأنها تلوّح بالوداع. التفت إلينا لما دخلنا، وانفرجت شفتاه عن شبه ابتسامة. دنوت وقبلت جبهته الصغيرة. كان نحيب زوجته يقطع القلب. ولده البكر منها، وهي الثانية بعد وفاة الأولى العاقر عن سن متقدمة، يتكلف الجلد ويتحرك بقلق ظاهر. جلس الفقيه عند قدميه وشرع يقرأ ياسين. بدا للحظة وكأن «السي» عبد الهادي يتابع مع الفقيه ما يتلوه، وعندما يتعثر في المتابعة، كان يرفع أصابعه إلى صدغه، فيفركه فركاً هيناً كما ليتذكر. كانت الرياح الشرقية في الخارج تعنف أكثر فأكثر. وكانت أصوات اعتمالات الشجر المحيط بالدار تصل إلى آذاننا وكأنها أصوات جنائزية قادمة من قاع سحيق. شرع شيوخ المدشر يفدون. بعد حين انبعث صوت «السي» عبد الهادي الخافت متلفظاً بأسماء أناس ماتوا من زمن بعيد: أمه، الحسين بن الحسين، الفقيه ابن رقية، المصطفى بلفقيه. كان يتحدث وكأنهم بحضرته. بدأ نحيب زوجته الأربعينية يرتفع. خارج الباب، الأطفال والنساء ينتظرون النعي. كاد الملوكي يلامس ذراع زوجة «السي» عبد الهادي، وهو يحاول أن يواسيها. ارتفعت نظرة ولد سيدي الصادق إليه، رصينة كالعادة. صعدت لذاكرتي أيام خوالٍ، عندما جانب من الورش (من المصدر) كانت «خدوج» لا تزال في مقتبل عمرها، وكان ولد سيدي الصادق وأحمد الملوكي يراهن كل منهما على أن تكون زوجته. ولد الصادق كان يؤكد لمن يعرفه أن خدوج إن انخدعت بالملوكي، ستكون فريسته في سلسلة ضحاياه التي لا تنتهي. كان الملوكي في فورة شبابه خنزيراً فعلياً؛ كان يترصد النساء في الغابة؛ كلما بدا له ثوب أبيض وأحمر (وهو لون ثوب النساء العام هنا)، كان يفقد صوابه تماماً فتراه، وكأن بعينيه عمى وبأذنه وقراً، يسعى في اتجاهه، كائناً من كانت صاحبته.
