لقد عرفت الكنيسة المسيحية في الحقبة الأخيرة من تاريخها، منعطفاً جديداً وخطيراً، حيث عادت أواصر التعاون والترابط والمحبة للظهور بين فصائل الكنيسة، بدأ كل هذا نتيجة محبة إنجيلية صحيحة عرف أن يجسدها رجلان من رجالات الكنيسة: بولس السادس بابا رومة،و أثينا غوراس بطريرك القسطنطينية، رومة الجديدة. وتتالت بعدها أعمال المحبة، فأشرقت على الكنيسة جمعاء. ولي تتجنب الكنيسة فخ بقاء هذه الحالة عند حد العواطف في العلاقات، عمدت إلى تجسيد آمالها ورغباتها في الوحدة عبر تشكيل لجان من ذوي الاختصاص بغية المضي قدماً على طريق الواقع لا الخيال، في سعيها الحثيث نحو الوحدة الشاملة، إذاك بشأن دراسات مسكونية وأبحاث علمية وتاريخية انكبت على التقليد العظيم تنبشه وتطالع ما فيه من إرث روحي وعقائدي. صار المؤلفون اللاهوتيون يرون الأمور جلياً، كما هي معاً، لا كما آلت إليه عبر الأحقاب، ومن خلال الثقافات والتيارات المتنوعة. فسطروا صفحات طويلة ودبّجوا مقالات عديدة حول المعضلات المتطارحة ونقاط التباين الشائكة التي نذكر منها على سبيل المثال لا الحصر: مسكونية الجامع، خلافات الزمن الفصحي وغير ذلك من مواضعي وعناوين تطرق البحث اللاهوتي إليها.
وفي هذا الخط وهذه النظرة المسكونية يندرج هذا البحث الذي اعتمد فيه صاحبه على تصريحات الجامع، ومواقف الآباء الأقدمين، وشروحات اللاهوتيين، ونصوص الإنجيل، وأحداث التاريخ، وذكريات التقليد، ليلقي ضوءاً جديداً على نقطة أساسية في لاهوت الكنيسة المبني على الشركة. فهو قد حاول في كتابه هذا تحديد الوظائف والمسؤوليات التي تعود إلى كل راعٍ في الكنيسة، وإبراز هوية البابا ودوره ضمن المصف الأسقفي، داعماً نظرته طوال البحث باستشهادات وفيرة وافكار موضوعية نزيهة.
