تتمحور موضوعات قصائد الزهراني حول العشق حيث تغلب النزعة الرومانسية بعناصرها المتوترة: الوجدان، الأنثى، الألم، الشكوى، الاغتراب، الضياع. والشاعر "نزّاع إلى التجديد، وهو من ابرز شعراء الموجة الأحدث في قصيدة التفعيلة "حيث يصرّ على إعطاء القصيدة الشعرية الجديدة تجلياتها العربية وجمالياتها الفنية الطالعة من موروث حضاري شديد الغنى والمفتوحة على ثقافة العالم". نبذة النيل والفرات: "مروا على باب المدينة عابرين سبيلهم، يستنطقون سنابل الجوعى على وجل، كأن ملامح الغرباء ليل مجدب، وكأن أرصفة المدينة شرفة للعابرين إلى أقاصي الوجد، موشومون بالحمى. لهم صوت الخيف يرتلون قصائد الموتى وقداس الحياة. مروا هنا، كتبوا على الجدران تاريخ الغزاة وأوغلوا في الحزن. فوق رؤوسهم غيم من البوح المعتق بالسؤال، حكاية الآتين من سفر النبوءة ، صورة الأنثى الخطيئة والعراة الطاهرون، وما إستكان إلى دروب الفيّ من أسقاه موال النجاة. مدّ عينيك كي تستفيق النجوم على أغنيات الصباح. مدّ كيفيك حتى تحيل التراب إلى جنة من نخيل مباح. إسكن الجرح، نافح عن المتعبين، ولملم ملامحهم من هجير الرياح. مروا...وصدىالقادمين إلى المدينة موغل في الصحو، لايجثو على الأرض المباب، ولا تساورهم شكوك الظل، صوت أبنيتهم مطر، يشاكس سيدهم وله، ويقتاتون حشو الأرض عطش، يلبسون جلودهم، مروا على جسر الغياب، مروا على باب المدينة، ليتهم قرأوا جفاف الطين. أشرعة القوارب حينما يتعانق العشاق، لوحات الأساطير سحنة السمار حين تباعدت. خطواتهم نحو الغشاوة يدخلون ثيابهم ورق من الشجر المحنطة بالوصية. هاهنا مروا، وغنوا للصبايا الفاتنات وأوجزوا...على جسر اللوزية تحت أوراق الفي...هب الغربي وطاب النوم وأخذتني الغفوية....عزفوا على وجع القصيدة غربة المعنى تقاسيم الحروف، وأجهشوا صمتاً كأن الريح أغنية الرعاة..." هاربة من تفاعيل القصيدة تنساب معاني الشاعر مستربلة بعبارات شعرية، تفتح آفاقاً وتشرع نوافذ تنطلق عبرها القصائد بحرية ودون قيود.
