إن التغيير حولنا من كل جانب، أوروبا الشرقية أصبحت حرة والإتحاد السوفيتي تفكك، والحرب الباردة إنتهت، وأوروبا الغربية تتحرك نحو الإتحاد الإقتصادي، وآسيا أصبحت المركز الجديد للقوى الإقتصادية العالمية، والديمقراطية بدأت تتغلغل من بولندا حتى جنوب إفريقيا، والسلام في المشرق الأوسط أصبح الطريق الجديد بدلاً من الحرب. والخصخصة (تحويل القطاع العام إلى خاص) أصبح هو (الموضة) في الإقتصاد لدى معظم الدول في العالم.
وأصبح من الضروري الآن التعرف على ملامح مدير المستقبل، وهنا تثور عدة تساؤلات: 1- هل يصلح المدير الدكتاتور (المتفاني في هيكلة العمل على حساب التعاطف مع الناس) مديراً للمستقبل؟ 2- هل يصلح المدير المجامل (المتعاطف جداً مع الناس على حساب هيكلة العمل) مديراً للمستقبل؟ 3- هل يصلح المدير الميكافيللي (وهو عادة المفاوض صاحب الحل الوسط والتنازلات والمناورات...) مديراً للمستقبل؟
لقد أثبتت بحوث الفكر الإداري المعاصر أن القاسم المشترك الأعظم لأولئك المديرين عي عملية التبادل: هات وخذ. هات نتائج وخذ مكافأة. وغالباً لا تكون عملية التبادل هذه حاسمة لخروج المكافآت عن سلطة الواعد بها لسبب أو لآخر. ومن هنا كانت الفعالية قليلة، لذا كان من المتحتم علينا في كل ظل كل تلك الظروف والتغيرات أن ننهض بأنفسنا ونرتقي بقدراتنا الإدارية لنكون مدراء على دراية ومهارة في التعامل مع تطورات المستقبل ومفاجآته.
