المسعوديكتاب للمسعودي أسماه بهذا الاسم لنفاسة ما حواه وعظم خطر ما استولى عليه ، وجعله تحفة للأشراف والملوك وأهل الرايات ، وجعله منبهاً على أغراض ما سلف من كتبه ، ومشتملاً على جوامع يحسن بالأديب العاقل معرفتها ، ولا يعذر في التغافل عنها . يشير المسعودي أن مروج الذهب يبلور ويوجز ويلخص ما في مصنفيه الكبيرين المفقودين : " أخبار الزمان " و " الأوسط " من الأخبار والمعارف والعلوم ، كما يجنح إلى تبسيط ما جاء فيها من معلومات ، ليكون مصنفه في متناول الغالبية من القراء . يبدأ المسعودي كتابه منذ بدء الخلفية فيتحدث عن الأرض والجبال والبحار والأنهار ، وانقسام الأقاليم بخواص الكواكب، ثم يتحدث عن الأمم الغابرة ، فيتحدث عن ملوك الصين والترك والفرس والرومان واليونان وأمم أخرى من الأمم القديمة ، كما يذكر البلاد العربية ومن سكنها والقبائل التي توزعت فيها بدءاً من العرب البائدة كثمود وعاد ، ويتحدث عن مواطن العرب في مكة المكرمة وعن الكعبة المشرفة وعن اليمن والعراق والشام والحجاز والبوادي ، مع تسجيل كل ما يتصل بالحياة العربية من عادات وتقاليد ومعارف ! كالقيافة والعيافة ... ويتحدث خلال ذلك عن الرسل وأممهم حتى يبلغ مبعث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فيتحدث عن رسالته وهجرته ، وغزواته وسراياه، ثم يتحدث عن الخلافة واطرادها . وقد يعد هذا الكتاب من المصادر التاريخية ذات الطابع الموسوعي ، لا طابع التخصص في علم من العلوم ، فهو لم يقتصر على كتابة التاريخ فحسب ، بل يضمنه معلومات جغرافية واجتماعية ودينية .
