إن المسعودي هو رجل من أهل المغرب، يعرف بأبي الحسن علي بن الحسين بن علي المسعودي، من ولد عبد الله بن مسعود نشأ في بغداد ثم وصل إلى أقصى البلاد لطلب العلم؛ وهو مصنف لكتب التواريخ وأخبار الملوك، وله من الكتب: كتاب يعرف بمروج الذهب ومعادن الجوهر في تحف الأشراف والملوك وهو الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا وكتاب ذخائر العلوم وما كان في سائر الدهور، وكتاب الإستذكار لما مر في سالف الأعمار، كتاب التاريخ في أخبار الأمم من العرب والعجم، وكتاب رسائل. اهـ. وغيرها الكثير.
ويعد كتاب مروج الذهب ومعادن الجوهر هو أشهر من أن يُعرّف لشيوعه، وقد طبع مراراً في جزأين، وَصَفَ في الأول منهما الخليقة وقصص الأنبياء مختصراً، ثم وصف البحار والأرضين وما فيهما من العجائب، ويدخل في ذلك تواريخ الأمم القديمة من الفرس والسريان واليونان والرومان والإفرنج والعرب القدماء وأديانهم وعاداتهم ومذاهبهم وأوابدهم وأطوال الشهور والتقاويم القديمة والبيوت المعظمة وغيرها، ثم عطف على تاريخ الرسالة الإسلامية من ظهور النبي إلى مقتل عثمان رضي الله عنه، وذكر في المجلد الثاني في تاريخ الإسلام من خلافة علي رضي الله عنه إلى أيام المطيع لله العباسي "توفي سنة 363".
ويظهر مما جاء في مقدمته أنه نقل هذا الكتاب عن عشرات من الكتب التاريخية وغيرها كانت موجودة في أيامه لم يصلنا منها إلا بضعة قليلة كتاريخ الطبري وفتوح البلدان للبَلاَذُريِّ، وأما الباقي فقد ضاع، وفيه عشرات من كتب التاريخ والسياسة والإجتماع، وفي خلال هذا الكتاب فوائد كثيرة لا تجدها في سواه.
ولذلك، فقد اعتنى بتحقيقه الأستاذ كمال مرعي وعمل على مراجعته وضبط نصوصه بأسلوب علمي رصيّن.
