هذا كتاب جمع فيه مؤلفه من علوم الأوائل ومعارفهم عيون المسائل وأمهاتها، ولم يفصل القول فيه تفصيلاً يطيل به على قارئه، ولا أحاط بأطراف ما تعرض له من المسائل، مكتفياً بأن ينتقي من كل عقد درة هي أثمن دررة وأغلاها عنده، وأن يعترف من كل عمر قطرة هي أهنأ قطراته وأمرؤها، وأن يقتطف من كل روض زهرة هي آرج أزاهيره وأنضرها. وقد تعرض لاختلاف العلماء في أكثر ما بحث من مسائله، وبين أقاويل هذا كتاب جمع فيه مؤلفه من علوم الأوائل ومعارفهم عيون المسائل وأمهاتها، ولم يفصل القول فيه تفصيلاً يطيل به على قارئه، ولا أحاط بأطراف ما تعرض له من المسائل، مكتفياً بأن ينتقي من كل عقد درة هي أثمن دررة وأغلاها عنده، وأن يعترف من كل عمر قطرة هي أهنأ قطراته وأمرؤها، وأن يقتطف من كل روض زهرة هي آرج أزاهيره وأنضرها. وقد تعرض لاختلاف العلماء في أكثر ما بحث من مسائله، وبين أقاويلهم، وأشار إلى بعض حججهم، تاركاً تفصيل ما أخذ فيه من القول إلى كتبه التي صنفها قبل هذا الكتاب وقد أخذ علمه الذي أودعه كتابه هذا وكتبه السالفة عليه من مصدرين: أحدهما جملة من كتب العلماء الذين سبقوه بالتدوين، وقد أشار إلى أكثر هذه الكتب في مطلع هذا الكتاب، وبين مقدار أهميتها في نظره. والمصدر الثاني، وهو في الأكثر عندما يريد أن يحدثك عن عادات بعض البلدان أو حاصلاتها، أحاديث الناس التي يتناقلونها كبرا عن كابر. فهو يقول لك: "وقد رأيت صاحب هذا الرجل المقيم بالواحات بباب الأخشيد محمد بن طغج، وذلك سنة ثلاثين وثلاثمائة، وسألته عن كثير من أخبار بلادهم، وما احتجت أن أعلمه من خواص أرضهم. وكذلك كان فعلي مع غيره في سائر الأوقات ممن لم أصل إلى بلادهم".
