يقوم معجم عمرو بن قميئة (تأصيلاً ودلالة وصرفا) على دراسة مفردات اللغة العربية التي جاءت باستخدامات الشاعر: صرفاً ودلالة وتأصيلاً. فمن الناحية الصرفية صنفت المفردات إلى أفعال وأسماء، وتم توزيعها على البنية التي تنتمي إليها، والغاية من سلوك هذين الطريقين دراسة شعر عمرو بن قميئة دراسة موسيقية. ومن الناحية الدلالية، تم توزيع الأفعال والأسماء إلى مجاميع تمثل مجالات دلالية كبيرة كالكون والبيئة الطبيعية والحيوان التي تتفرع إلى مجالات دلالية صغيرة كالسماء والفلك والأنوار والأرض... مع بيان كيفية استخدام الشاعر لألفاظ كل مجموعة، وبحث مسائل الترادف والاشتراك اللفظي والتضاد. أما الناحية التأصيلية أو المعجمية فتقوم على إرجاع المفردات إلى أصولها وبيان معانيها، مستعينة بالسياق الذي ترد فيه. وقد استفاد هذا المعجم من كتب التراث اللغوي القديم، ومن المعاجم العربية، ومن الدراسات اللغوية الحديثة العربية والمعربة. وتهدف هذه الدراسة إلى إفادة الباحثين في الدراسات الأدبية والنقدية وتعرفهم بأسلوب الشاعر والوقوف على ميزاته التعبيرية، كما تهدف هذه الدراسة المشاركة في إعداد المعجم اللغوي للشعر الجاهلي تمهيداً لإعداد المعجم اللغوي التاريخي للغة العربية.
