تواجه دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة منذ تكوينها سلسلة صعبة وخطرة من التحديات التي أثبتت المعطيات التاريخية السابقة ومجريات الأحداث الراهنة ضرورة مواجهتها بحكمة لكي تجتاز الدولة امتحان التنمية المستدامة العسير، وتتلخص هذه التحديات في أربعة رئيسة هي: التحديات السياسية، والتحديات البشرية، والتحديات الاقتصادية، والتحديات الحضارية؛ فعلى الصعيد السياسي واجهت دولة الإمارات منذ اليوم الأول لإعلانها تحديات سياسية كبيرة داخلية وخارجية، تمثلت في ترسيخ فكرة الدولة الاتحادية وتكريس الولاء لها، وفي الاعتراف بالكيان الاتحادي إقليمياً ودولياً ودرء الخطر الإيراني.ومن ناحيتها شكلت التحديات البشرية مثل مشكلة العمالة الوافدة والتركيبة السكانية المختلة هماً من هموم التنمية المجتمعية الحديثة في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة. أما التحديات الاقتصادية فتتبدى في إفرازاتها الاجتماعية والحضارية المتمثلة في البطالة والهجرة الوافدة التي تهدد الهوية الوطنية بالإغراق، والعديد من الأمراض والأوبئة الاجتماعية نتيجة تواجد هذا العدد الهائل من العمالة الذكورية في بقعة صغيرة من الأرض. وأخيراً تأتي التحديات الحضارية بفعل كل من العولمة الشرسة والاستعمار الثقافي والتغريب والتهديد المتعمد للهويات والثقافات المحلية واللغات الوطنية. إن هذه التحديات من الممكن التغلب عليها بالتخطيط السليم وبناء الاستراتيجيات الوطنية الجيدة وتكاتف الجهود الرسمية والشعبية.
