تنصب هذه الدراسة بالدرجة الأساس على تاريخ جزء من العالم العربي إبان العهد العثماني وتهدف إلى استعراض المرتكزات التي قامت عليها سيادة الدولة العثمانية ومشاكلها وجوانب ضعفها في أقاليم الأطراف. في القرن التاسع عشر وأوائل القرن العشرين خصوصاً وإن الدولة العثمانية بدأت تعيش مع بدايات القرن التاسع عشر عدداً من التناقضات التي أدت إلى إضعاف سيطرتها في أماكن كثيرة وظهور قوى مناهضة لها. وهذا ما يحاول مؤلف الكتاب التركيز عليه إذ يقصر هنا مجال بحثه على نجد والإحساء، أو ما يطلق عليه هو اسم خليج البصرة كما يبحث في طبيعة الصراعات والنزاعات التي نشأت في هذه المنطقة مع عدد من القوى الأوروبية وعلى رأسها الإنكليز. وهنا يسلط الضوء على الحركة الوهابية وقيام الدولة السعودية، حيث أثار ظهور الحركة الوهابية الجدل الواسع بين المسلمين، كما كان ظهور السعوديين واعتمادهم الحركة الوهابية سبباً في زعزعة هيبة العثمانيين. والكاتب كما يذكر لا يهدف إلى كتابة تاريخ الحركة الوهابية كحركة دينية مستقلة ولا إلى كتابة تاريخ السعوديين كحركة سياسية وإنما يهدف إلى تصحيح العديد من المفاهيم الخاطئة التي علقت في أذهان الكثيرين ويعتمد المؤلف في عمله هذا على الوثائق العثمانية ولهذا السبب فإن الأفكار المطروحة هنا تعكس وجهة نظر العثمانيين دون غيرهم.
