من الأسلة الجوهرية التي يفترض أن تجيب عنها النظرية الدلالية السؤال التي: أين يوجد المعنى؟ ومعلوم أنه يفترض في الإجابة عن هذا السؤال إقامة الاستدلال الملائم بصدد الحيز الذي نضع فيه المعنى.فالمسألة ترتبط ،إذن،بافتراض ينبغي أن يقوم عليه الاستدلال الملائم. ومن المعلوم أيضا أن المعنى لايمكن أن يوجد خارج المكونات التي تسهم في البناء اللغوي باعتباره خاصية بشرية تصف العالم الذي نعيش فيه وتتحدث عنه. فهل يوجد المعنى في أذهان البشر أم في العالم (أو الوضع) المشترك بين بني البشر؟ونفترض بهذا السؤال أن المعنى لا يمكن أن يكون خارج هذه العلاقة (الإنسان و العالم) .وقد كتبت أدبيات كثيرة عن هذا الموضوع، سواء في المباحث الفلسفية أو اللسانية أو السيميائية أو التيولوجية. للبشر آليات ذهنية تتيح لهم بناء التركيب اللغوي حاملا لمعنى معين. البشر يتحدثون، من خلال اللغة التي ينتجونها، عن العلم الذي يعيشون فيه سواء أكان هذا العالم فيزيائيا أم مجردا.إن العلم الرياضيات، مثلا، لغته المكونة من رموز رياضية محكومة بقوانين معينة تتيح إنتاجها. ولا يمكن لشخص عادي أن يؤول هذه الرموز لأنها لاتصف العالم الذي يعرفه. إنها تصف عالما آخر يفهمه الرياضيون وحدهم باعتبارهم عارفين بقوانين إنتاج وتأويل هذه اللغة. هذا الاعتبار وحده لا يكفي. هناك اعتبار آخر ،وهو عالم الرياضيات نفسه. هناك تعامل معين للرياضي مع هذه اللغة،ولا يمكنه بناء المتواليات الرياضية التي لا تصف شيئا، أو المتواليات اللاحنة رياضيا. فلكي تكون المتواليات جيدة عليها أن تحمل معنى،أي أن تتحدث عن شيء تصفه تلك اللغة. الاعتبار الثالث يرتبط بالعلاقة التي تجمع بين الرياضي والعلم الذي يصفه. ما نوع هذه العلاقة ،وما طبيعتها؟ هل المعنى موجود في الرموز التي يستعملها من خلال علاقتها بما يوجد في العالم الذي يصغه بلغته، أم إن الرموز نفسها لا معنى لها إلا من خلال ما يوجد وما يوصف؟ العلاقة التي نتحدث عنها هي ما يمكن أن نصطلح عليه بالإدراك: فهل يمكن فصل المعنى عن مشكل الإدراك؟ وهل المعنى هو ما ندركه، كما تذهب إلى ذلك بعض النظريات.
