بعد أن أقفلت أُمنا الباب، استهلك المفتاح لحمها· أصبحت نحيفة، ومتحدبة· تئن بنغمة وحيدة ورتيبة مثل قوس النداف، ونحن من عتبات الغرف نراها تدور خلف ما يسلت تعبها، وتسكب الماء لشجرة الزيتون التي زرعها أبونا قبل ميلادنا ولم ينبت ظلها إلى الان· نراقبها ونقول سيقع المفتاح من شيخوختها، ويضيع منها المكان، ولكن عزيمتها غلبت مكيدة الزمن، واستمرت تحرس مفتاح بيتنا الحديدي الضخم بحلقته الكبيرة، وببدنه الطويل المنقوش بصور من معركة قديمة· يجهدها ثقله الأصيل· تنقله من يد إلى يد، وعندما تتربع في عزلتها تنزله ليستريح منها في وهدة ثوبها الأسود· كانت تقول لتبعد عن قلبها سوء ظنها بنا أن هذا المفتاح هو في الأصل مفتاح باب الجسر، وان حسن أفندي العمري، رئيس البلدية، هدم الباب في سنة 1891 مع ملحقاته من السور لان الأعداء أصبحوا يطيرون، ويأتون من السماء، واهدى مفتاحه إلى جدها
