بدا السمارتو بحجمه المناسب للعبة كرة السلة، وبجناحيه المتقاطعين على ظهره، وقد قحل لونهما، وبالدلو الخشبي المدلى من يده اليمنى المزينة بسوار عاجي نقشت عليه مراحل نمو زهرة البيبون· بدا لبصر يونس مثل تلميذ ينتظر عقابه في غرفة مدير مدرسة· ظهرت لرأسه قنبعة من ريش منتصب، قبل أن يحرك منقاره، ويرد باسلوب مبسط: ــ أنا حارس آتو نبشتم·· عملت في صناعة السفينة، وكنت ملاحه الخاص·· حاربت معه من أجل انقاذ البشرية من الغرق·· أخرج غصن الآس من الدلو، وتوجه بمنقاره نحو القمر· عم السكون المكان· تلاطم البياض في عدسة عينه الشاخصة وتابع: ــ هو الذي أطلقني من السفينة للبحث عن اليابسة· لم يكن يثق بذكاء الطيور، مثلك تماما· كنت بشرا بوجه وسيم، ولي حبيبة وأطفال· وبعد فيضان عظيم، ورعد، وبرق، وأمطار· كل قطرة منها بحجم الكبة· نقصت المياه، وكشف آتو نبشتم الغطاء عن السفينة وقال: من يبحث لنا عن اليابسة؟· فقلت: أنا·· سمارتو الملاح يبحث عن اليابسة ويعود اليك بالبشرى· كان الرب قد أبطل السباحة، والغوص، وجعل الماء موتا، فأخذ ما علق في نعليه، من طين بيته، ومسح به ظهري· قال: باسم الرب تخرج من ظهرك·· من روح الرب تظهر؛ فخرجت الأجنحة من ظهري· ومسح رأسي بطين بيته وقال: باسم الرب يتحول·· بقدرة الرب بصرك الان حديد؛ فتحولت ملامحي البشرية إلى رأس صقر· وفي اليوم السابع، أطلقني من السفينة للبحث عن اليابسة· لم أجد موضعا أحط فيه فعدت· ثم أطلقني مرة أخرى؛ فعثرت على هذا الغصن ولم أجد موضعا أحط فيه فعدت· ثم أطلقني من السفينة المنتظرة للرحمة؛ فوجدت هذا الماء الصافي ولم أعد اليه·
