تلعب القراءة والكتابة دوراً مهماً في تنمية شخصية الطفل وتجعله يجاري أفراد جيله، كما وتؤثر على علاقاته الاجتماعية، لأن الضعف في هذه الجوانب يقود إلى الخلل والانطواء والقلق والخوف والإحباط والشعور بالدونية أو قد يؤدي إلى العدوانية.
يعد الضعف اللغوي المتمثل بجوانب القراءة والكتابة مؤشراً على أحد أشكال الانحراف عن المستوى العادي والتي تسبب إعاقة التعلم للطفل.
إن الأطفال الذين يعانون من صعوبة في التعلم سواء أكانت الصعوبة ناتجة عن خلل وظيفي في الدماغ أو إعاقة بحاجة إلى الوقوف إلى جانبهم، ومعالجة المعلومات التي يتم أخذها بطرق صحيحة تؤدي إلى تطوير الجوانب العقلية، والانفعالية، والاجتماعية، والتعليمية، وذلك لأن المعالجة الخاطئة في إعطاء المعلومات تقود إلى إنتاج أفراد معوقين تعليمياً.
هذا ويعتمد نجاح التعليم على أكثر من جانب، فالمؤثرات الحسية داخل غرفة الصف، والفروق الفردية بين المعلمين، والأسلوب المتبع في التدريس، كلها جوانب يمكن التحديد من خلالها نجاح العملية التعليمية أو فشلها.
وبناء على ذلك فقد تم وضع هذا الكتاب الذي تناول طرقاً علمية مدروسة في تعليم ذوي الحاجات الخاصة وإكسابهم جانباً مهماً في تعلم اللغة المقروءة والمكتوبة من خلال ربط الكلمة بالصورة، الهدف من وراء ذلك استثارة أكثر من حاسة، فالطفل يرى ويسمع وينطق وبذلك تتكون لدى الطفل القدرة التمييزية بين ما يسمعه ويراه وينطقه، ويستطيع أن يتخلص من الصعوبات المتعلقة بالقراءة، وهكذا تنمى لديه القدرة على تهجئة الحروف، وإدراك التشابه والاختلاف بين الحروف والكلمات كما ينمى لديه التركيز وربط الكلمة بمفهومها.
ولتنمية جانب الكتابة فقد تم إعطاء الطفل ثلاثة صور للحرف الواحد كي يتسنى له تمييز شكل الحرف ونوعه وبذلك تقل مظاهر القصور المرتبطة بالكتابة من تشويش للحرف أو أخطاء في ربطها مع بعضها.
