حقق رشدي راشد كتب علماء العرب الرياضيين وترجم المخطوطات العربية إلى الفرنسية وشرحها تاريخيًا وفلسفيًا ورياضيًا وعلق عليها . كما أعاد إحياء تراث ابن الهيثم والخوارزمي والكِندي وعمر الخيام والسموأل وقدم عنهم حقائق تاريخية لم تكن معروفة من قبل.

تبدو الرياضيات العربية كما تعرضها معظم بحوث تاريخ العلوم منذ بداية القرن التاسع عشر بمظهر مليء بالمفارقات، شأنها بذلك شأن بقية العلوم المكتوبة بهذه اللغة. لذا كان لا بد من معرفة واقع هذا العلم من وجهة منهجية علمية من خلال دراسات تشمل الكتب التراثية المؤلفة في هذا المجال وذلك لوضع هذا العلم العربي في وضعه الصحيح. ويأتي هذا الكتاب "تاريخ الرياضيات العربية بين الجبر والحساب" في هذا الإطار ليذكر بملامح تاريخ الرياضيات العربية وهو يعني قبل كل شيء تحديد موقعنا بين الجبر والحساب من جهة، وبين الجبر والهندسة من جهة أخرى، وليكون مرجعاً يمكن من خلاله فهم الرياضيات الكلاسيكية وبخاصة تلك المكتوبة بالعربية. وجاء ذلك في هذا الكتاب الذي تناول من خلاله الدكتور رشدي راشد بحوثاً تلح على إثبات الحركة الأولى بين الحساب والجبر وعلى وصفها. وقد اقتضى البحث استرجاع حدث وهو ظهور كتاب الخوارزمي في الجبر، ففي هذا المؤلف يبدو الجبر في الواقع لأول مرة في التاريخ نظاماً مستقلاً ومعروفاً بهذا الاسم. وإن كثيراً من البحوث المجموعة في هذا الكتاب تتسم بهذا "العود إلى بدء" بالنسبة إلى الجبر، وقد غدا ذلك ممكناً نتيجة لحركة الحسبنة، أما البحوث الأخرى فقد خصصت لدراسة تأثير هذا الجبر الجديد في الحساب ونظرية الأعداد.
