حدث في السنين الأخيرة تقدم كبير في أبحاث الجيولوجيا وفروعها مثل علم الباليونتولوجيا الذي يبحث أشكال الحياة في العصور الجيولوجية السابقة كما تمثلها الحفريات الحيوانية والنباتية. ومنذ بدأت هذه الدراسات عرف العلماء أن هناك أنواعاً كثيرة من الكائنات الحية قد انقرضت تماماً واختفت من على سطح الكوكب الأرضي. والمثل المشهور لذلك هو انقراض الديناصورات. والإنقراضات عموماً ظلت مستمرة منذ بدء الحياة على طول الزمان الجيولوجي، وهو زمان يقاس ببلايين السنين. ولكن هل يمكن أن نفسر كل الإنقراضات الكبيرة والصغيرة بسبب واحد هو الاصطدام بجرم سماوي أو نيزك؟ هناك حجج في وصف ذلك وحجج أخرى ضده، وما زالت الأمور غير محسومة ومفتوحة للبحث والنقاش، غلى أن مجمل القول كما يرى داقيد روب في كتابه هذا، أن أفضل ما يمكن تخمينه هو أن الانقراض توليفة من الجينات السيئة أو عدم التكيف، ومن الحظ السيء أو نظرية الإصطدام. فبعض الأنواع قد تنقرض لأنها لاتستطيع التغلب على تحديات البئة في موطنها، ولكن الأغلب في الإنقراضات الجماعية أن يكون سببها هو سوء حظ الأنواع المنقرضة إذ تتعرض لضغوط فيزيقية كالإصطدام. ولعل الأمر أن الإنقراض بسوء الحظ أو الإصطدام يعمل علم
