يندرج هذا الكتاب، نظرياً وميدانياً، في مجالات العلامة الاجتماعية، وهي تتحرك في الوسط الاجتماعي، في ما تحمله من مؤثرات ومؤشرات. ويُعنى، أيضاً، برصد حركة هذه العلامة في حلّها وترحالها، ضمن عالم سوسيو – ثقافي وتاريخي معيّن. هذا الطموح يدفع باتجاه التشريع العلمي لمقاربة سيميو – سوسيولوجية، لا تكتفي فقط ببناء نسق العلامات، بل تربطه بالسياقات الاجتماعية التي انتجته. هذا هو رهان الكتاب: البحث في منطقة التقاطع، نظرياً وتطبيقياً، بين حقلين معرفيين، ظلاّ متباعدين على الأقل في سوسيولوجيتنا العربية. ولقد مكّن هذا التداخل من تحقيق مكسبين: الأول، فسح المجال أمام السوسيولوجي ليبني نصّه الاجتماعي من غير المكتوب؛ أما الثاني، فيتتبّع العلامة في "حلّها وترحالها"، وما يطرأ عليها من تحوّل دلالي حينما تتمثّل السياق الاجتماعي، فتعود محمّلة بمعانٍ مختلفة فرضها المستعمل وجغرافيته وأوضاعه الاقتصادية. وينبّه هذا الكتاب، من ثمّ، إلى ما في عالمنا الاجتماعي من أنسجة رمزية تضجّ بعلاماتها، في: المدينة، والشارع، والتسميات، والرصيف، والسيّارة...؛ وهكذا، فإن السيميولوجيا التي تضمّنها هذا الكتاب هي سيميولوجيا فوق لسانية، تتجاوز حدود اللغة لتلازم الظواهر الاجتماعية بحثاً عن نصّيّاتها.
