يُراد بالمقالات التي يتضمنها هذا الكتاب الإسهام في تطوير جانب أو أكثر من جوانب المنحى الخاص بـ"علم اللُّغة السيميائي" في مجال "الفن اللفظي". ويُعد "علم اللُّغة السيميائي" ضمن هذه النظرة ميداناً فرعيّاً من ميادين علم السيميائي، ويهتم هذا العلم بالعلامات عامة، اللُّغوية منها وغير اللُّغوية المستعملة عند الإنسان أو الحيوان، في حين لا يتناول "علم اللُّغة السيميائي" سوى وظيفة الإتصال عند الإنسان عن طريق العلامات اللُّغوية، ويختلف هذا العلم عن علم اللُّغة في أن الوحدة الأساسية فيه ليست الجملة بل النص، مولياً إهتمامه بالمبادئ التكوينية التي تكمن وراء النصوص. وينظر إلى هذه المبادئ على أنها تؤلف شفرة (لغة) من الدرجة الثانية وهي مظهر من مظاهر شفرة الدرجة الأولى، والشفرة الأخيرة هذه هي موضوع التحليل اللُّغوي التقليدي، ويولي علم اللُّغة السيميائي العلامة الكافية بين هاتين الشفرتين إهتمامه، تركز هذه المقالات على بيان الجوانب النظرية والأسلوبية في وضعها النصوص الروائية، وتحليل جزئيّاً أو كليّاً "وردة لإملي" للكتاب "وليم فوكنر" و"زيت الكلاب" للكاتب "امبروس بيرس" واستمدت المقالات أساليب تحليلها من تلك التي طوّرت ضمن النظرية البنيوية الشكلية إزاء الأدب الشعبي (الفولكلور).
