لقد حاول مؤلف كتابنا هذا "تاريخ محاسن بغداد" الشيخ ياسين العمري "المتوفى سنة 1232هـ" ذكر كل شيء عن بغداد، محلاتها وقصورها وأنهارها وغيرها، وكانت مصادره كتاب معجم البلدان لياقوت الحموي. كما استقى أسماء الملوك والأمراء والأعلام من الخطيب البغدادي، (تاريخ بغداد)؛ وبعض المراقد من مرتضى نظمي (جامع الأنوار)، إلا أنه فصل في الأحداث التي مرّ بها العراق عامة وبغداد خاصة من عام (941هـ إلى 1220هــ). وكانت هذه التفاصيل تزداد وضوحاً وبياناً كلما اقتربنا من العقود التي عاصرها، فجاءت المعلومات عن نهاية القرن الثاني عشر والربع الأول من القرن الثالث عشر مفصلة، ومن هنا اكتسب الكتاب أهميته واستحق جهد تهذيبه وتحقيقه. وقد عمد المحقق خلال عمله فيه إلى تهذيب الكتاب، بحذف الإستعراضات السريعة التي استغرق بها المؤلف عن العصر العباسي والحكم المغولي، إذ جاءت معلوماته عن هذه الفترة بسيطة وعبارة عن نقول من كتب تاريخية متوفرة، ولا تحمل أي تفرد، بينما يختلف الأمر تماماً، عند حديثه عن الفترة المشار إليها آنفاً، فإنه تفرد بمعلومات مهمة، وتراجم فريدة، حصل عليها من رجال الحكم مباشرة، أو من الذين شاركوا في صنعها، فتحدث عن معارك وقعت في بغداد والموصل والولايات القريبة للدرجة التي يذكر فيها عدد القتلى وأسماءهم، والطرق التي سلكوها وما إلى ذلك من تفاصيل مهمة، بما لا يستغني عنها المؤرخ.
