تأتي هذه الدراسة لتضاف تأتي هذه الدراسة لتضاف إلى مجموعة دراسات كان المؤلف قد نشرها في المجلات العراقية تناول فيها مؤرخين عراقيين لم يتصد لهم أحد بالدراسة، فيقدم من خلالها واحداًَ من أهم هؤلاء المؤرخين، ذلكم هو ابن النجار صاحب كتاب "ذيل تاريخ بغداد" محاولاً من خلالها وضع يده على حياة المؤرخ، مقدماً تصوراً وافياً من كتابه الذي كان له النصيب الأوفر من الدراسة. كما قاده البحث إلى إجراء مقارنات علمية مع مناهج كتب التاريخ المعاصرة أو السابقة لجيل ابن النجار ليخرج من ذلك بصورة لأساليب عصر هذا المؤرخ في التأليف. وتأتي أهمية هذه الدراسة من جديتها أولاً ومن كون كتاب ابن النجار الذي تركز عليه مرجعاً للمؤرخين بعده.
