في هذه الرواية يقص علينا الروائي "خليفة بن سلطان العبري" حكاية خاصة يطل من خلالها على قضية أعم وأشمل.
في "على الباب طارق" يضعنا الروائي أمام موضوعة المرض والموت، من خلال رصده لمعاناة عائلة مؤلفة من أب وأم وأربعة صبية صغار، يتغلغل المرض إلى أمعاء الأم حتى تصاب بمرض السرطان، ومن خلال رحلة البحث عن الشفاء بين مستشفيات العاصمة وبلاد الغربة، يضيء الكاتب على قضية الفساد الإداري في القطاع الصحي، ومعاناة المواطنين جراء إهمال أو خطأ الأطباء حيث نشهد حالة لسرطان الرحم لشابة يقول الراوي: " ... شابة حديثة الزواج أخبره أبوها بأنه بعد اكتشاف إصابتها بسرطان الرحم في بلدها تقرر إجراء عملية جراحية لها وأثناء عملية الإزالة حدث ارتباك للطبيبة الجرّاحة حيث اعترفت لوالدها لاحقاً بأنها لم تستطع إزالة الورم كله نتيجة ذلك الإرتباك. لذا أتوا بها إلى هنا على أمل وجود أيد لا ترتجف أثناء العمليات! ..".
من ناحية أخرى، تكشف هذه الرواية النقاب عن أولئك الدجالين الذين يستعملون حاجة الناس في المجتمعات المتخلفة إلى العلاج بتزويدهم بالأعشاب التي يمكن أن تؤدي إلى أمراض أخرى. وهنا يصف حالة أحد المرضى: " ... أن التسمم الكبدي أو الفشل الكلوي بفعل عدم قياس نسبة السمية في المواد التي تناولها على أنها أدوية عشبية تركته ضيفاً على سرير مشفى ... ليكتشف متأخراً الكارثة الكبرى التي تحققت ببركة الدّالين وزبانيتهم وبعد فوات الأوان".
"على باب طارق" رواية هادفة وعميقة في آن، ندرك معها أن الحياة إمتحان دائم لا بد من لنا من مواجهته بالأمل. وهذا ما أراد أن يقوله الراوي، فكان خير من كتب وخير من أجاد التعبير ...
