خلال فترة الحكم العثماني للبلاد العربية أمر السلطان "عبد الحميد الثاني" ببناء عدد من الأسواق في كل من أسطنبول، دمشق، مكة المكرمة، والإحساء في السعودية، ولم يبق من هذه الأسواق سوى سوق الحمدية في دمشق. وفي روايته هذه ينقل لنا "سلطان سعد القحطاني" الكاتب والروائي السعودي المعروف أحداث روايته من جبال اليمن إلى سوق الحمدية، حيث يتخذ من "الإحساء" مكاناً وزماناً لأحداثها خاصة أن الإسم يتشابه مع السوق الشهير في دمشق، إلا أن المقصود بسوق الحمدية هنا، هو سوق الحمدية في الهفوف الذي تذكره بطل الرواية عندما جلس في مقهى دمشق، فكاد بذاكرته إلى الهفوف ليسرد لنا أحداثاً وشخصيات من ذاكرته يعيد من خلالها صياغة الواقع وتنظيمه ليشكل بالنسبة للقارئ العربي نسقاً فكرياً أو ربما قراءة أكثر عمقاً للتاريخ المرسوم بحدود الجغرافيا. يقول الكاتب عن عمله هذا "... روايتي عن الإحساء كعاصمة قديمة لمنطقة البحرين، ولم يبق من الحمدية في الإحساء إلا القيصرية التي يعاد بناؤها الآن في الهفوف، والرواية تجسيد لثقافة الخليج العربي ممثلة في الإحساء، بمائها ونخيلها وناسها وثقافتها...". "سوق الحمدية" هي ثقافة منطقة وتاريخ حافل شكلته جذوره المغروسة في سنوات الماضي العربي، يجمع "القحطاني" في طياته كواليس الحياة في الخمسينيات والستينيات من تاريخ بلاده الإجتماعي والثقافي، وبين ما تغير في هذا الزمن وما تبدل في النظرة إلى حضارة الماضي البعيد وأسواقه وأسواره...
