من ذكريات الدكتور حسين مؤنس في كتابه (حكايات من أيام زمان): «عهدي في ولائم السويسريين – والأوربيين عامة – أنها تكون مختصرة ولكنها وافية محسوبة، فإذا كنتم أربعة مثلا فهناك أربع قطع من اللحم، ونادرا ما توجد خامسة، ولكن اللحم ممتاز، وما معه من الخضر يكفيكم عن سعة». عرض عليه أستاذه الذي دعاه للغداء كأسا من الخمر فأمتنع. سأله أستاذه: ولكن هل أنت تمتنع عن الخمر بسبب الدين؟ أجاب: هذا هو الأساس طبعا، ولأنه هو الأساس فإن الخمر لا تدخل في طعامنا ولا نستطيع أن نتذوقها، وأنا شخصيا لا أجد في نفسي أي رغبة لتذوق الخمر، كأنني- مثلا- حصان وضعت أمامه قطعة لحم فإنه لن يمسها ولو كانت من أفخر اللحوم، إذ لا مكان لها في طعامه أو معدته. قال الأستاذ: ولكن لي معارف شرقيون مسلمون يعبون الخمر عبا. - أنت قلتها با أستاذي، إن الذي يعب الخمر، فهو إما مقلد يتباهى بذلك وإما سكير مدمن مريض. قال الأستاذ: على أي حال فإنني من المعجبين بالإسلام وتحريم الخمر من فضائله الكبرى. أنت لا تعرف كم تكلفنا الخمر من الصحة والمال. إن لدينا في هذا البلد 180.000 مدمن لا أمل في شفائهم، وفي هولندا والسويد والنرويج يصل المدمنون إلى سبع السكان، وفي مدينة هامبورج في ألمانيا تقتل الخمر كل سنة ما لا يقل عن عشرة آلاف إنسان. ومرضى الكبد وإصابات الخمر الأخرى هناك منها مئات الألوف.
