من المعلوم إلى أي مدى استأثرت، باهتمام الباحثين، آراء ابن خلدون في التاريخ والاقتصاد والفلسفة الاجتماعية، تلك الآراء التي تبقى بلا شك إسهامه الأساسي في إرث البشرية الذهني.
إننا لم نشك في قيمة الأعمال التي خصصت لبحث هذه الأمور، بل اعتبرناها، إجمالاً، مكتسبات. إنما إن ضرب الأطروحات الأقوم على محك التطبيق في قطاع معين لا يمكن إلا أن يفيد.
وهكذا، وحيث أن موقف ابن خلدون العام يعتبر عقلانياً صريحاً. فقد تساءلنا ماذا يحل بهذا الموقف على صعيد ملاحظة الظاهرات الدينية.
لماذا مثل هذا التساؤل؟ لابن أبن خلدون يطمح إلى تأسيس علم شمولي يمكن أن يحمل اسم تاريخ أو سوسيولوجيا أو انتروبولوجيا، ولا يهم هنا كونه، يتحرك قبل كل شيء في أفق الإسلام. ألم يكن هو نفسه مسلماً ومتشعباً بثقافة إسلامية بالمعنى التقليدية للكلمة؟ ألم يكن مغربياً، ابن تلك الأرض التي شدد على خصوصيتها أكثر من أي كان آخر؟ كيف سيدخل العناصر هذه في شمول تصوره؟ ما السبيل إلى التوفيق بين الأرثوذوكسية (السنة) والهم العلمي؟ بين الفوقانية والتاريخية؟
